Citation Gap How it works

See which best-of lists in your category leave you out.

When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google for the best tool in your category, the answer is built from third-party pages: roundups, comparison posts, alternatives lists. I check which of those pages name your competitors and skip you. The audit is free.

In all five categories I audited, the leader was named on more pages than the startup.

Real counts from audits run in August 2026 on five funded B2B SaaS companies, names removed. For each one I ran ten buying questions and read every third-party page that came back. The payroll startup was named on 1 of 25 pages. Its category leader was named on 12. In every category, the leader showed up on more pages.

How it works

  1. You send your domain.

That is the whole ask. No login, no access to your analytics.
  2. I run the questions your buyers ask.

Ten buying questions in your category, the kind a buyer types before a demo. I read the third-party pages that come back and count who gets named.
  3. You get the audit.

Which lists name you, which skip you, and who gets named in your place. It is yours to keep whatever you decide.
  4. If you want, I pitch those pages.

I contact the people who write the lists and make the case for adding you. You pay only for placements that go live.

Who writes the pages that do name themAll 3 are bylined by a named person with a bio. The startup's own posts carry named authors too, but they live almost only on its own site.

A full audit adds the list of pages that skip you, who wrote each one, and which ones have no product of their own to protect. Those are the pages worth pitching.

What it costs

The audit is free. Placement is paid per result, with no retainer. If a placement does not go live, you do not pay for it.

Straight answers

Does this get me into ChatGPT's answers?

I can't promise that, and nobody honestly can. What I measure and work on is the set of pages those answers are built from. Being on more of them gives you better odds of being named. It is not a guarantee.

Is this just SEO?

Partly. Google says optimizing for AI answers is still SEO, and I agree. The piece most teams skip is getting named on other people's pages, because it takes outreach, not publishing. That is the part I do.

Which lists will you pitch?

Only pages that have nothing of their own to sell in your category. A competitor's "top 10" list will not add you, so I don't waste your money on it.

Who is doing the work?

Me, Nick Kaufman. Citation Gap is one person in Texas. I read every page myself, and you deal with me directly.
